Divine Lunga, a player from Mamelodi Sundowns, emphasizes the team’s commitment to reclaim the CAF Champions League trophy for Chloorkop as they gear up for their second consecutive final in this renowned tournament.

Last season, Sundowns made it to the final but were ultimately disappointed after losing to Pyramids FC, the Egyptian giants who celebrated their first title victory.

This season, the Tshwane club has another chance to create history by facing Moroccan team AS FAR in the final, with the first leg scheduled for Sunday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The Brazilians aim to capitalize on their home advantage to establish a strong position before the return leg in Morocco next weekend.

Sundowns are vying for their second CAF Champions League title, having famously clinched it in 2016 under the guidance of former coach Pitso Mosimane. Only captain Denis Onyango and veteran midfielder Themba Zwane remain from that triumphant squad.

Lunga acknowledged the players’ awareness of the occasion’s significance and their duty to fulfill the club’s long-standing quest for continental glory.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the CAF Champions League final again this season, and our objective is to bring the trophy back home,” Lunga stated.

“It’s been a decade since the team last held this trophy. We’ve reached the semifinals in prior years, and while last season saw us in the final, we aim to accomplish the same this year. We will do everything possible to retrieve the trophy.”

The 30-year-old also reflected on Sundowns’ earlier meetings with AS FAR, noting that the two teams drew 1-1 twice, once at home and once away, during last season’s group stage.

However, Lunga believes the final will pose a different challenge, even though both teams are familiar with each other.

“What I can say is that the Champions League is a unique environment,” he emphasized.

“Yes, we faced them last season and are aware of their strengths and weaknesses. This competition can feel unpredictable.

“Thus, we will strive to perform at our best, especially since we’re starting at home. Our aim is to score goals to create an advantage for the away leg.”
