Thapelo Xoki, a defender with Orlando Pirates, believes that their previous encounters against strong teams such as Al Ahly, MC Alger, and Mamelodi Sundowns will be essential in managing emotions during the Nedbank Cup final.
The Pirates are preparing to take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Ke Yona Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium this Saturday at 15:30.
They head into this derby with an edge, having faced significant competition throughout the season and achieving a league double over the Chiefs.
Notably, Pirates also accomplished a league double over the Chiefs last season, a milestone not reached since Ruud Krol’s time at the club. Their latest league victory against the Chiefs emphasizes their dominance in this rivalry.
While Chiefs struggle, the Buccaneers have had a challenging season, highlighted by an impressive away victory against Al Ahly in Cairo during the CAF Champions League, along with wins over CR Belouizdad and MC Alger in Algeria.

This season marks their return to the Champions League group stages for the first time since the 2018/19 season. They topped their group and scored a notable victory against Sundowns, who are set to play in the Champions League final, earlier this season.
Additionally, Pirates secured the MTN8 title in October by defeating Stellenbosch at the Durban venue, celebrating their third consecutive “Wafa Wafa” Cup victory.
In contrast, the Chiefs have struggled with inconsistent domestic form, risking a second consecutive year without a top-eight finish.
Xoki emphasizes that the Pirates’ experiences in high-pressure matches, unlike the current state of the Chiefs, have been instrumental in honing their skills.
“Winning crucial games gives us invaluable experience as a unit,” Xoki stated.
“We have many young players who have recently faced games of this nature.
“This experience benefits them and the entire club in how to prepare for these matches, what to expect, and how to perform on the day.
“Everyone understands their responsibilities. There’s no need to motivate anyone for this game; everyone knows the challenge that lies ahead.
“Therefore, this experience is advantageous for matches like these.”
While Pirates missed out on the Betway Premiership title to Sundowns, needing just four points from their last three matches (if Pirates were to win all), they advanced to the Champions League semi-finals, ultimately falling to Pyramids.
In their two-legged tie against the Egyptian team, which will face Sundowns in the Champions League final, Pirates had chances to move forward but were ultimately hindered by set-pieces. Set-piece problems also surfaced in their recent league loss to Sekhukhune United at home, affecting their pursuit of Sundowns in the league standings.
“Indeed, we have let in goals from set-pieces, but that doesn’t detract from the effort exerted this season,” Xoki acknowledged.
“Aside from recent matches, we have been one of the strongest defensive teams against set-pieces. We now need to focus on the finer details and resolve minor issues. We recognize that we have conceded in critical matches, but we will return to what has worked for us all season.”
