Johannesburg – With great sadness, we announce the passing of veteran Democratic Alliance (DA) member Douglas Gibson at the age of 82.

“On behalf of the DA, I extend our sincere condolences to the friends and family of the remarkable South African, Douglas Gibson,” stated party leader John Steenhuisen on Friday, (9 May 2025).

Douglas was a distinguished politician and public servant, widely recognized for his tenure as the Chief Whip of the Democratic Party and later the Democratic Alliance in Parliament, as well as his service as South Africa’s ambassador to Thailand.

“The positions of Chief Whip and Ambassador truly represent who Douglas was,” lamented Steenhuisen.

“He was a dedicated champion for freedom in South Africa, and even in his final days, he fought passionately for the ideals that he and our party stood for.

‘Moreover, he approached every endeavor with exceptional compassion, ensuring accessibility and humanity in all his interactions throughout his career.

“In addition, he served as a remarkable ambassador for our nation, our party, and the principles of non-racialism and freedom.”

Steenhuisen further stated: “If anyone embodied the best of our country, our party, and our cherished values, it was Douglas.

“His charm and intellect allowed him to connect with others and find common ground for collaboration.

“He will be profoundly missed.

“As we carry on the struggle he so fiercely championed for a better South Africa, we will strive to honor his memory and the significant contributions he made throughout his life to foster a nation of true freedom and vibrant opportunities.”

Though retired from active politics, Gibson continued to be a significant voice on developments within the DA, including its decision to partner with the African National Congress to create a Government of National Unity.
