Tragedy unfolded when Ed O’Brien fell from a tree at Millennium Square.
The 23-year-old was immediately taken to the hospital and remains in a coma.
A JustGiving campaign has been established for Ed’s courageous fight, successfully raising over £10,000, far exceeding the initial target of £750.
Among the donations, one person wrote: “Thinking of you. Strength and love!”
As a dedicated Leeds supporter and an Atlanta Hawks player, he is also associated with the 49ers Enterprises group that owns the club.
Ed’s mother, Stacey Barker, shared online: “As far as I know, he had been drinking, but I don’t believe he was excessively intoxicated as some have suggested.”
“I also firmly believe that no other substances were involved.”
She noted that his recovery will be a “slow and lengthy process” and “is not expected to be without complications.”
The JustGiving page states: “To support Ed O’Brien and his family as he bravely fights for his life following a fall from a tree during Leeds’ league celebrations on Monday.
“His parents reside in York, and this situation imposes significant travel and time off work costs for them.
“We aim to raise funds to alleviate some of this burden. MOT stay strong, Ed.”
