Jose Riveiro, the coach of Orlando Pirates, expresses strong optimism about the club’s trajectory for the upcoming season, emphasizing that the team’s growth is part of a broader strategy that will attract the right successor.
Riveiro is expected to leave the club at the conclusion of his three-year term, during which the team has demonstrated remarkable advancement this season.
The Pirates are on track to achieve their highest points total under Riveiro, having accumulated 52 points from just 23 matches, following their comeback 2-1 win against Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.
During Riveiro’s first season, Pirates collected 54 points, followed by 50 points last season. With 52 points already secured and five matches remaining, they are set to exceed both of those totals in Riveiro’s final season.
Additionally, the Pirates have advanced to the CAF Champions League semi-finals this season, marking significant progress after not advancing past the preliminary rounds last year. This achievement, combined with the chance to secure another domestic cup double for the third consecutive year under the Spanish coach, highlights a sustained period of success.

The departure of a successful coach often raises concerns about the approach of the new manager and the possible disruption of team development. New appointments can lead to significant changes in playing style and player personnel, potentially undermining the momentum built under Riveiro.
“Did you hear my previous response?” Riveiro replied when asked about continuity during the post-match press conference on Tuesday. “This initiative represents the club’s vision, not just Riveiro’s. I’ve addressed this question numerous times. The club is clear about its direction. The right decision will be made.”
“They will have the necessary support and a strong foundation to build upon as we wrap up the season. Football operates in cycles, and Orlando Pirates is a formidable institution; no changes will happen simply because Riveiro is present or absent. The Buccaneers [Pirates fans] need not worry; the future is bright for the club and will exceed expectations.”
While the team has improved this season, it seems unlikely that Pirates will catch Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership title race, as Sundowns are close to clinching their eighth consecutive league title.
The Pirates now turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs at the Durban venue on Saturday, striving for an unprecedented third consecutive win in this tournament.
