The Suez Canal Stadium was alive with excitement on Tuesday evening as Amajita, the South African U20 national football team, celebrated a remarkable 4-1 victory over Sierra Leone in the AFCON U20.

This win moves Amajita closer to the quarterfinals, with an important match against Zambia approaching quickly.

Amajita showcased their skill right from the start, executing accurate passes that left Sierra Leone’s defense in a scramble.

Their efforts paid off in the 14th minute when Jody Ahshene linked up perfectly with Shakeel April from Cape Town City to net the opening goal.

Despite Sierra Leone’s aggressive attempts, Amajita’s goalkeeper, Fletcher Lowe, made crucial saves to maintain the team’s lead.

The first half ended with Amajita leading 1-0, but Sierra Leone stepped up their game in the second half.

Still, Amajita held firm and scored a second goal in the 60th minute, with skipper Neo Rapoo assisted by Ahshene. Sierra Leone responded quickly, narrowing the gap with a goal from their captain, Momoh Kamara, in the 70th minute.

Amajita’s coach, Raymond Mdaka, made strategic substitutions, bringing in Patrick Autata and later Thabang Mahlangu and Langelihle Phili to bolster his attack.

The addition of Mahlangu and Phili was pivotal, as Mahlangu scored twice in quick succession—netting the third goal in the 86th minute and sealing the match with a fourth in the 90th minute, completing his brace.

This victory positions Amajita second in their group with six points, just behind group leaders Sierra Leone, who have seven points.

Despite the defeat, Sierra Leone has already clinched a spot in the quarterfinals. Amajita’s final group match against Zambia is set for Friday, as they aim to progress further.

With the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place teams, advancing to the quarterfinals, Amajita seems well-positioned for progression.

The team’s performance against Sierra Leone highlighted their capabilities, and they are determined to carry this momentum into their final group match.

Amajita’s win over Sierra Leone has paved the way for an exciting final group showdown against Zambia. With their eyes firmly on success, Amajita is hungry to make a lasting impact in the AFCON U20.
