Pretoria – The Republic of South Africa has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran following the devastating explosion that occurred at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran.

The significant explosion on Saturday, (26 April 2025), is reported to have been triggered by the ignition of chemical materials, as per state media.

In a statement released on Monday, (28 April 2025), the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) remarked: “The government of the Republic of South Africa conveys its deepest sympathies to the Iranian government and its citizens after the tragic explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, which has resulted in over 40 fatalities and serious injuries to more than 1,000 people.”

The statement also expressed: “South Africa offers its sincere condolences to the families grieving for their loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured, including individuals from multiple nations.”

“We commend the commitment of emergency response teams and volunteers who are tirelessly aiding and supporting those impacted, alongside the governments providing immediate assistance.”

“We stand in solidarity with the government and people of Iran during this challenging time following this tragic event.”
