The much-awaited Soweto Derby in South Africa, showcasing Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, has officially sold out.
This announcement was made by Pirates, the host team for the thrilling match at FNB Stadium on February 1.
On Friday, stadium officials reported that only 15,000 tickets were left. However, by Saturday, Pirates confirmed that all tickets were sold.
The swift ticket sales can be linked to Pirates’ impressive season, currently positioned in second place in the Betway Premiership, with 27 points from 11 matches, just three points behind the league-leading seven-time champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.
In contrast, Chiefs have struggled for consistency this season, finding themselves in sixth place with 18 points from 13 matches, nine points behind Pirates.
Pirates have recently established themselves as the dominant force in these Derby matchups, winning their last three encounters, including the Nedbank Cup semifinal in 2023.
This forthcoming match will mark the 181st meeting in this storied rivalry, with Chiefs slightly ahead in the overall record, boasting 74 wins compared to Pirates’ 47 victories. There have been 54 drawn matches and five abandoned games. Overall, Chiefs have netted 230 goals in the Soweto Derby, while Pirates have scored 196.
Before this legendary clash at the 2010 World Cup final venue, Pirates will face three additional opponents.
They are set to compete against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League this weekend, where a draw will clinch the top position in Group C.
After that, they will take on Royal AM at Harry Gwala Stadium on January 23, followed by a match against Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup last 32 just three days later, also away.
