Marcel Koller, the head coach of Al Ahly, emphasizes that their primary goal is to achieve victory against Orlando Pirates as they strive to top Group C ahead of their CAF Champions League showdown at Cairo International Stadium this Saturday (18:00).
Even though both teams have secured their spots in the quarterfinals, the competition for supremacy is set to ignite in what is anticipated to be an exhilarating match, especially following their previous encounter which ended in a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium.
Currently, Jose Riveiro’s squad leads the group with 11 points, where a draw would be enough for them to maintain their position. On the other hand, the Egyptian giants are positioned second with 10 points and need a win to surpass the Buccaneers.
However, the Swiss coach understands that clinching all three points in Cairo against a team that remains undefeated in the group will present a significant challenge, even as he stays hopeful for his team’s performance.
“I am optimistic about our prospects for a successful match, but I acknowledge that it will be a tough battle as the opponents have performed admirably and are at the top of the group. They put up a formidable fight at their home ground in the first leg,” Koller remarked.
While remaining vigilant about the threat from the Sea Robbers, Koller asserts that their mission is to unseat the Pirates and assert their dominance in the group as they advance toward the knockout rounds—a feat they have achieved just once in their last five campaigns.
“Our aim is to win and secure the top position in the group, a challenging endeavor. However, we are thoroughly prepared, and our well-rounded squad is equipped to handle any absences,” remarked the two-time CAF Champions League winner.
The defending African champions are poised to welcome back key player Emam Ashour, who has netted six goals in his last three games, along with Wessam Abou Ali, who is recovering from minor injuries, as they seek to achieve three consecutive continental titles.
“Although we are managing significant injuries, the quality of our players makes up for those who are unavailable, and anyone who steps onto the field has the chance to showcase their abilities. The match will not be easy for us, particularly with younger or less experienced players,” Koller explained.
“It’s premature to discuss our championship prospects, but our victories so far suggest that we are on the right track. We have lifted the title twice and are aiming for a third straight trophy, but this does not imply that our opponents have fewer chances.”
The Soweto giants will look to draw motivation from their impressive 4-3 victory in their last visit to Cairo. Historically, the Pirates have faced Al Ahly seven times, achieving two wins, three draws, and one loss.
