Johannesburg – The Public Servants Association (PSA) urges the government to “quickly implement remote work” for personnel in areas experiencing severe rain and flooding.
On Thursday, (16 January 2025), the South African Weather Service (Saws) issued alerts concerning severe thunderstorms and potential fire hazards.
Saws predicts heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds affecting numerous regions.
“The recent and ongoing heavy rains in certain parts of the country have damaged road infrastructure, impacting the movement of individuals,” the PSA stated.
“Implementing remote work will protect the well-being of affected employees and minimize the risk of accidents and injuries due to hazardous road conditions.”
“Many government workers are equipped to operate from home thanks to significant investments made by departments during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The public service union noted that the pandemic demonstrated that many employees can effectively perform their essential duties outside the office.
“Forcing employees to risk their safety by navigating flooded and damaged roads can result in serious consequences,” the PSA cautioned.
Many rivers and streams have flooded, creating hazardous conditions around low bridges.
“Employees are experiencing delays due to potholes, standing water, and non-functional traffic signals,” the union pointed out.
“The situation is especially critical in rural areas where the roads are unpaved and muddy.”
“Additionally, many government facilities are in disrepair, further compromising employee safety.”
“The rural provinces are suffering the most from the destruction of roads, schools, and homes, leaving many areas inaccessible.”
The PSA emphasized that adopting remote work would also relieve pressure on emergency services and infrastructure overwhelmed by the weather conditions.
“Affected employees will be able to continue their work without interruption, ensuring consistent service delivery,” the PSA concluded.
The union reiterated that the government “must prioritize employee safety” by enacting remote work policies in the impacted regions.
