The Mpumalanga police have initiated a manhunt in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Lieutenant-Colonel Pieter Pretorius, a 59-year-old commander of the Vehicle Identification Unit in Ermelo, which appears to have been a targeted attack.

According to reports, Pretorius was en route to meet an informant when he was ambushed by an armed assailant. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that the officer was shot while operating an official vehicle, which was later discovered with multiple bullet holes.

“After the incident, the suspect is believed to have fled the scene in a white sedan,” Ndubane stated, highlighting that a specialized investigation team has been established to probe the homicide and track down those responsible.

Provincial Police Commissioner Vows Justice

Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner of Mpumalanga, has denounced the shooting, describing it as a direct attack on the state.

“This heinous act has robbed our community of a dedicated officer committed to their safety,” remarked Mkhwanazi. “We are optimistic that we will achieve a breakthrough soon, and those responsible will be apprehended and brought to justice swiftly.”

Mkhwanazi extended heartfelt condolences to Pretorius’ family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult period.
