On Monday, Blue Origin LLC deferred the inaugural launch of its new flagship rocket to resolve an unspecified issue with the vehicle.

The company, supported by Jeff Bezos in its bid to rival Elon Musk’s dominant SpaceX, continually delayed its anticipated launch time throughout a three-hour timeframe in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The firm did not provide specific details about the next attempt to launch the New Glenn rocket.

“We’re standing down on today’s launch attempt to troubleshoot a vehicle subsystem issue that will take us beyond our launch window,” Blue Origin said. “We’re examining options for our next launch attempt.”

A successful mission would position the company among a limited number of U.S. firms capable of placing satellites into orbit, enabling Blue Origin to effectively compete with SpaceX’s dominance in the market.

On the eve of the launch attempt, coinciding with his 61st birthday, Bezos shared with Bloomberg News that the space industry can support “multiple winners.”

“There will be new applications for space that will drive demand for large capacity,” Bezos stated.

“SpaceX will continue to prosper and be successful. Blue Origin will also achieve success. Moreover, there will be some company that hasn’t even been imagined yet, which will also thrive,” he added.

Bezos publicly announced the New Glenn initiative in 2016, although work had begun prior to that date, with hopes to launch before the decade’s end.

However, Blue Origin has encountered hurdles due to a sluggish corporate culture and various challenges, particularly surrounding the development of the core BE-4 engines manufactured in-house. These engines were finished much later than planned but have since been successfully used in the United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan rocket.

The New Glenn rocket is expected to be vital to Blue Origin’s ambitious space objectives, which include launching satellites for commercial clients, NASA, and the Defense Department.

According to Chief Executive Officer Dave Limp, Blue Origin aims to carry out six to eight New Glenn flights in 2025, as reported by Bloomberg.
