Polokwane – The Chuene Clinic, located in Thokgwaneng village, Limpopo, remains closed following a tragic incident in which two nurses were abducted during their night shift by armed intruders and subsequently assaulted.
Describing the horrifying events that occurred on Friday, (10 January 2025), the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) stated: “Two nurses on night duty were taken at gunpoint, assaulted, and raped at Chuene Clinic in the Capricorn District.”
The nurses’ union further stressed: “The heavily armed assailants entered the Chuene Clinic, overpowered three security personnel, and restrained them before abducting the two nurses.”
“This shocking incident occurred around 1:00 am while the nurses were diligently performing their night duties.”
“The perpetrators took the two nurses with them, returning only around 5:00 am.”
“Currently, both nurses are coping with severe physical and psychological trauma.”
On Saturday, the Limpopo Department of Health informed the local community that the clinic would remain closed.
“Under the circumstances, we advise community members to seek medical assistance at the nearest clinics in the surrounding areas,” stated Neil Shikwambana, spokesperson for the Limpopo health department.
“We are committed to keeping you updated about the reopening of the Chuene Clinic and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Shikwambana also expressed deep sympathy for the clinic staff and the local community.
“As we navigate this challenging time, let us unite in keeping the two nurses and all clinic personnel in our thoughts and prayers,” remarked Shikwambana.
“By coming together, we can foster a supportive environment for our healthcare professionals.”
However, DENOSA has criticized the department for insufficient security measures at public health facilities in the province.
“We urge the Department of Health to strengthen security at health facilities by ensuring the deployment of capable and armed security personnel, as well as the installation of surveillance cameras and other monitoring equipment,” stated Jacob Molepo, DENOSA provincial secretary.
Molepo also called on the police investigating the alarming incident at the Chuene Clinic to “leave no stone unturned” in their efforts to bring the offenders to justice.
The nurses’ union has demanded that all staff at the clinic receive counseling services and that night shifts be suspended indefinitely.
“DENOSA wishes a swift recovery to the affected nurses,” commented Molepo.
