Johannesburg – The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has detained a group of individuals suspected of criminal activity, aged between 26 and 38, and confiscated unregistered firearms and live ammunition in Daveyton, Benoni.
On Wednesday, (8 January 2025), around 09:30, officers from the EMPD’s Eastern Region Task Team arrested four male suspects.
As reported by the City of Ekurhuleni, the series of events that led to the arrests began when EMPD officers were alerted about a gang traveling in a white Toyota Avanza that was displaying fake registration plates.
This gang was allegedly causing concern among residents of the Mina Nawe informal settlement.
“The officers initiated a pursuit and found the vehicle with four occupants, including the driver, at the junction of Buffalo and Brazil Roads in Mayfield,” the City stated.
“Upon performing standard checks on the vehicle and its passengers, it was found that the driver did not possess a valid driver’s license, and the vehicle’s [license] disc was counterfeit.
“The officers then searched all the occupants and the vehicle, discovering two unregistered 9mm firearms with their serial numbers removed, along with seven live rounds,” they continued.
The suspects were then taken into custody and transported to Putfontein Police Station.
“Further investigations are underway to consider the possibility of additional charges against the four individuals,” the City concluded.
