South Africa is in mourning over the passing of one of its most beloved and resilient figures, Winnie Khumalo, who unfortunately passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the age of 51. Renowned for her remarkable contributions to music and television, Khumalo took her last breath at home following a brief illness.

The heartbreaking news was announced by her daughter, singer Rethabile Khumalo, who reached out to media personality Sabelo “Ntombeningi” Sithole after finding her mother unresponsive.

Sithole, deeply saddened by the news, remarked: “I rushed to her home, but it was too late. I’m heartbroken—I have lost a dear friend.”

A Life Marked by Achievements and Challenges

Khumalo’s career lasted several decades, with her first recognition as a teenager after being discovered by the late Brenda Fassie. At just 15 years old, Khumalo debuted with the album Hey Laitie, Tshina Tshina, produced by the iconic Sello Chicco Twala.

She collaborated with some of South Africa’s most notable artists, including Brothers of Peace (B.O.P.), Bongo Maffin, and DJ Cleo, before moving into acting with memorable roles in popular series such as Muvhango and Mponeng.

Despite grappling with health issues such as diabetes, asthma, and back surgery that temporarily left her reliant on a wheelchair, Khumalo remained a model of resilience. She once remarked: “Many of my peers have passed on, but I want to see my grandchildren grow old. I pray for long life.”
