This morning, authorities apprehended four suspects, including a grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, following the recovery of a vehicle believed to be hijacked at Mandela’s historic residence in Houghton.
The identity of the grandson is known to SurgeZirc SA but is being withheld until official confirmation, as he is implicated in the hijacking that occurred last night in Benoni.

Initial reports from the police indicate that the stolen vehicle was brought to the Houghton property while the original driver remained inside. Although the driver’s present condition is unverified, it has been reported that he is currently at an Ekurhuleni police station preparing to file a report.
A Residence in Disrepair
The Houghton residence, once a symbol of Mandela’s legacy, has regrettably deteriorated in recent years, diminishing the revered leader’s memory.
Reports reveal that the property has declined since Mandela’s grandchildren moved out, following the City of Johannesburg’s disconnection of electricity services due to mounting unpaid municipal bills, which soared from R15,000 to R50,000 monthly.
Mbuso Mandela, one of Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren, has publicly criticized the trustees of the Nelson Mandela Trust for their neglect in maintaining the estate and failing to act in the family’s best interests.
“There is considerable collusion between the trustees and the estate executor,” Mbuso stated. “It is well-known that board members of a trust receive stipends for their maintenance work. I suspect there is an arrangement to avoid proper upkeep of the house.”
Initiatives to Uphold Mandela’s Legacy
Recently, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi pledged to restore the historic residence, recognizing its significance as a cornerstone of Mandela’s legacy. Philanthropist Collen Mashawana has also offered funding for renovations through his foundation, marking a potentially positive move toward preserving this iconic home.

The four individuals taken into custody at the residence, including Mandela’s grandson, face charges of hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. Additionally, an unlicensed firearm was found at the scene, although police have not yet established a connection to the incident.
This arrest raises significant concerns about security and the safeguarding of Mandela’s heritage, as the once-celebrated residence becomes a focal point of both controversy and restoration efforts.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, with further updates expected in the coming days.
