Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has declared that its Emergency Services Department is presently “on high alert” due to concerns about the possible adverse effects of continuous rainfall.

In a statement issued to The Bulrushes on Tuesday, (7 January 2025), officials from the City of Tshwane noted that the rains are leading to disruptions within “our communities.”

On Monday, (6 January 2025), the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 4 alert.

SAWS anticipated disruptive rainfall for today, Tuesday, (7 January 2025).

The weather forecast indicates that rain will persist until Wednesday, (8 January 2025).

The Tshwane Emergency Services Department is advising local communities to remain vigilant during these severe weather conditions.

The potential impacts of disruptive rainfall may include:

  • An elevated risk of localized flooding, especially in vulnerable low-lying areas, informal settlements, and affected roadways.
  • Likelihood of mudslides, rockfalls, and soil erosion, which could further endanger residents’ safety.
  • Traffic disruptions due to flooding on major routes.
  • Minor to severe vehicular accidents caused by poor visibility and slippery roads.
  • Localized service interruptions, including power outages and infrastructure damage.
  • Certain communities becoming inaccessible due to being cut off.
  • Danger to life from swiftly flowing streams and rivers.

The City of Tshwane recommends that communities follow these safety guidelines:

  • If possible, stay indoors and avoid metal objects that could be struck by lightning. Do not engage in outdoor activities such as fishing or golfing during the rain, as fishing rods and golf clubs can attract lightning.
  • Avoid seeking shelter under isolated trees or tall structures during thunderstorms.
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded low-lying streets, bridges, and swollen streams.

The Tshwane Emergency Services Department will continue to monitor weather updates and remain alert for any related emergencies.

“Residents are strongly urged to stay informed and monitor short-term weather forecasts, including any warnings or alerts from the SAWS and other reliable sources, and to follow the recommended safety precautions without delay,” stated the Tshwane Emergency Services Department.

“We also encourage residents to be vigilant and report any fire or rescue incidents immediately by calling 107 toll-free or alternatively at 012 358 6300/6400.

“When reporting an emergency, please stay calm, speak clearly, know your location to provide the correct address, and share your contact number so that the operator can return your call if necessary.”
