LUKE LITTLER is excitedly anticipating the chance to don the England jersey with pride this summer as he aims to add the World Cup of Darts to his collection of trophies.

He has also issued a challenge to Luke Humphries, his teammate, suggesting that he is resolute in his quest to attain the top spot in the world rankings.

Having captured his first world darts championship title, Littler, now 17, has climbed to the second spot in the PDC Order of Merit, amassing £1,118,500 in prize money.

This amount does not include the additional earnings he collected for winning the Premier League (£315,000) or his successes in World Series events (£150,000).

Last year, Littler had just begun his professional career and was not highly ranked enough to qualify for the World Cup featuring 40 nations—a surprise to many observers.

This year, he has been selected to represent England and is poised to form an all-Luke dream team in Frankfurt during the tournament scheduled for June 12-15.

Humphries, who is 29, along with Michael Smith, aged 34, were the reigning World Cup champions from last summer, while the legendary duo of Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis has claimed the title four times.

A passionate supporter of England, Littler donned the Three Lions jersey when the previous manager, Gareth Southgate, led the team to the Euros 2024 final, where they ultimately lost to Spain in Berlin.

He explained: “Last year, many were unaware that selections depended on rankings, and numerous people questioned, ‘Why isn’t Luke Littler in the World Cup?’
“I had to clarify: ‘Because I’ve just embarked on my journey.’

“Now, with significant ranking money influencing my position, I believe I’m quite competitive with Luke. I can hardly contain my excitement.”

Humphries is likely still reeling from his unexpected 4-1 defeat in the fourth round to Peter Wright at Ally Pally, which led to him losing the Sid Waddell Trophy.

In 2025, Cool Hand Luke will need to safeguard the substantial prize money he secured from previous victories and deep runs in tournaments, while Littler, now entering his second professional season, awaits his opportunity.

The young star from Warrington stated: “Naturally, the World No. 1 spot could be within reach this year.

“Especially if Luke Humphries is unable to defend his prize money.

“However, if he secures victories this year and maintains his earnings, I will have to acknowledge his accomplishments.”
