Johannesburg – The City of Ekurhuleni is looking into the cause of the power outage that occurred on Thursday night, impacting the municipality that includes O.R. Tambo International Airport.

On Friday, (3 January 2025), the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) reassured travelers that O.R. Tambo International Airport remains fully operational despite a brief power disruption affecting the Ekurhuleni Metro area.

ACSA reported that the outage, which happened on Thursday, (2 January 2025), at 19:20, was triggered by a trip in the municipal power grid.

“The local municipality is currently investigating the reason for the disruption,” stated the airports company.

“It is important to note that ACSA is not responsible for identifying the source of the issue as this power outage is outside of our jurisdiction.

“We want to emphasize that all vital airport services, including terminal operations, airfield activities, and cargo handling, are continuing without any disruption.”

ACSA noted that the airport’s backup generators kicked in within 15 seconds of the power loss, ensuring that airport operations were not affected.

“All generators have been successfully checked and are fully operational,” ACSA confirmed.

“Cargo operations are continuing smoothly, supported by backup power systems to prevent any delays or interruptions.

“ACSA is actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

“Passengers are encouraged to stay in touch with their airlines for any updates regarding flight schedules.”

For live flight notifications, passengers may also download the ACSA Mobile App.

“We appreciate our passengers’ understanding and patience during this time,” ACSA stated.
