Johannesburg – A postmortem report has revealed that Miriam Singh, a 32-year-old expectant mother, who tragically passed away shortly after being admitted to a health facility in Westbury, was suffering from a “serious underlying condition.”
Singh lost her life at the Westbury Clinic Midwifery Obstetric Unit on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
The Gauteng Department of Health, which initiated an investigation into this widely covered incident, announced on Thursday, January 2, 2025, that it has “received the results of the internal investigation, which underwent expert review by leading specialists in obstetrics/gynaecology and surgery from Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.”
The department further stated: “The internal report confirmed that the healthcare workers present adhered to all correct protocols.
“The postmortem report indicated that the patient had a serious underlying condition that contributed to the rapid deterioration of her health shortly after her arrival at our facility.”
The department noted that, due to doctor-patient confidentiality, it could not disclose specific details regarding the patient’s medical condition.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, residents of Westbury gathered outside the Westbury Clinic Midwifery Obstetric Unit, seeking explanations from staff about the circumstances surrounding Singh’s passing. Singh’s husband mentioned that he had accompanied her to the medical facility.
“Earlier today, the investigating officer from the South African Police Service presented the postmortem report to the Singh family,” the department stated.
“In response, the Gauteng Department of Health has expressed disappointment regarding the unfounded allegations that were prematurely shared on public platforms by various parties, which were not based on clinical facts but on hearsay.
“Such conduct is not only irresponsible and unethical, but it also adds to the pain experienced by the grieving family as they must deal with misinformation about their loved one’s condition, complicating their understanding of clinical realities.
“The Department extends its deepest condolences to the Singh family for their sudden loss and will continue to offer counseling services and support as needed, whenever the family is ready.”
