Significant progress has been made in areas such as poverty reduction, decreasing living costs, and enhancing the government’s ability to deliver essential services.

Addressing the Energy Crisis

Ramaphosa praised the advancements in addressing South Africa’s energy challenges, particularly highlighting Eskom’s integration of Unit 2 at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station into the national grid.

With Unit 1 also operational, Koeberg is expected to supply 5% of the country’s electricity needs, aiding in the effort to reduce load shedding.

“We are committed to making substantial new investments in electricity generation and working toward a competitive electricity market,” Ramaphosa asserted.

Global and Regional Support

The president spoke about international and regional issues, reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to supporting those facing injustice.

  • Middle East Conflict: “We continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people,” stated Ramaphosa, calling for an end to hostilities and the release of hostages in Gaza.
  • Mozambique Instability: He also expressed concern over the political instability in neighboring Mozambique, underscoring the need for regional cooperation.

While recognizing progress made, Ramaphosa offered condolences for the tragedies of the year, including the loss of children in Soweto and other areas due to contaminated food.
