Johannesburg – Authorities have detained six individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in Riverlea, Langlaagte, following a violent confrontation with the police.

As reported by Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the arrests occurred on Friday, (27 December 2024).

“Police seized unlicensed firearms and ammunition used by the suspects,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo confirmed.

The police acted on intelligence reports regarding illegal mining operations in Riverlea.

Officers from the police National Intervention Unit responded to this intelligence and commenced a hunt for the suspects.

“Upon reaching the designated site, police found tools related to illegal mining activities,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo noted.

“While officers were confiscating the tools, the suspects opened fire, resulting in a shootout.”

The police took two suspects into custody, who were found in possession of a rifle and a pistol, along with loaded magazines.

Furthermore, four additional suspects were captured in the vicinity.

Lieutenant Colonel Masondo stated that the arrested individuals face multiple charges, including attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“Further investigations have indicated that all suspects are unlawfully in the country,” Lieutenant Colonel Masondo added.

The suspects are anticipated to appear in court shortly.
