Durban – KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has taken measures to speed up assistance for the residents of the Masinenge Informal Settlement, where a fire has devastated at least 28 homes.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Boxing Day, Thursday, 26 December 2024.
“Our hearts go out to the families who have been displaced after their residences were consumed by flames around 2 am today,” MEC Duma expressed.
Initial inquiries indicate that an intoxicated person fell asleep while trying to cook dinner.
The lit stove caused the fire, which quickly spread to neighboring homes.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities.
MEC Duma visited the Masinenge Informal Settlement as soon as he was informed of the tragedy to talk to the affected families.
He was accompanied by the Mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, Cllr Zodwa Mzindle, as well as local councillors and officials from the Human Settlements department.
“Regrettably, some family members whose homes were lost are currently away on holiday,” MEC Duma noted.
“We are keeping in close contact with the National Department of Human Settlements. Our appreciation goes to national Minister Thembi Simelane for dispatching a senior manager to ensure a quick response.”
The MEC confirmed that a national department team is working with dedicated groups from the provincial Department of Human Settlements, Ugu District, and Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality.
To enhance support for the impacted families, MEC Duma highlighted the following actions:
- Accelerating the profiling and verification of victims, with 16 residents already verified;
- Delivering urgent relief services, including temporary housing, warm blankets, food, and other necessary supplies.
“We would like to remind communities about the fire hazards connected to cooking while under the influence of alcohol,” warned MEC Duma.
“We appreciate the swift action of the Fire & Rescue Teams from both municipalities, including Emergency Rescue Services, for their rapid response in extinguishing the fire.”
