Durban – Prince Ndabuko Zulu has formally stepped down from his role as mayor of the AmaJuba District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) announced on Thursday, (19 December 2024), that the mayor had consented to resign.
“The IFP NEC held a meeting today with the Mayor of AmaJuba District Municipality, Cllr. Prince Ndabuko Zulu,” the party’s statement, attributed to national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa, reported.
“Following discussions, the NEC made a decision to request the immediate resignation of the mayor.
“Consequently, Prince Ndabuko Zulu has submitted his resignation from the mayoral office.
“This decision was taken in the best interests of the AmaJuba District.”
When The Bulrushes sought clarification on the reasons behind Prince Zulu’s resignation, the IFP referred back to their statement, which did not disclose any specific information.
However, prior media reports suggested that the mayor was under investigation for alleged misconduct regarding a contract for the construction of a reinforced concrete reservoir.
The IFP expressed gratitude to Cllr. Prince Ndabuko Zulu for his dedication and leadership during his tenure.
Following the resignation of Prince Ndabuko Zulu, Deputy Mayor Thembelihle Mthembu will take on the responsibilities of acting mayor until further notice.
“The party’s relevant committees will manage the process of filling the mayoral vacancy,” added the IFP.
Meanwhile, the municipality has assured residents that the mayor’s resignation will not affect service delivery.
