Craig Wright, who has long asserted that he is the creator of Bitcoin, has been found guilty of contempt and sentenced to a year in prison.
The Australian computer scientist was handed a 12-month jail term, which has been suspended for 24 months, after a judge in the U.K. ruled him guilty of contempt of court.
In March, a court determined that Wright was not Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous inventor of Bitcoin (BTC). This decision followed his £900 billion intellectual property lawsuit, where he sought copyright ownership of the Bitcoin whitepaper and important code databases.
The Crypto Open Patent Alliance countered by suing Wright in the U.K. to put an end to his claims of being Satoshi. Key figures in the Bitcoin community, such as Adam Back, the creator of the proof-of-work consensus model, testified against him during the proceedings.
COPA emerged victorious, with Wright being declared “Not Satoshi” in court, ultimately committing contempt of court during his legal efforts to claim Nakamoto’s identity.
As reported by the Guardian, Wright did not disclose his physical location during the sentencing for his jail term. He participated via a virtual meeting platform and indicated that he plans to appeal the court’s decision.
