The Johannesburg Regional Court has imposed a sentence of five consecutive life terms on 34-year-old Ashraf Hartley for the appalling rapes of his young relatives, who were between six and 12 years old, in Bosmont, Johannesburg.

Rape Suspect Sentenced

The court determined that these sentences will be served consecutively. One of the victims disclosed Hartley’s offenses in a letter to her mother after learning about sexual education in school, prompting an investigation led by Sergeant Masedi.

“The accused (Hartley) was apprehended and faced charges including four counts of rape and one count of compelled rape. The investigation uncovered a distressing pattern of abuse from the accused, who became part of the family at just 11 months old,” remarked Mjonondwane.

From 2008 to 2021, Hartley targeted his young relatives, using coercion and manipulation to silence them.

“In one particularly disturbing incident, he forced one victim to assault his sister. Additional evidence illustrated a deliberate and systematic pattern of abuse, as Hartley exploited his trusted role to inflict harm on his younger relatives,” Mjonondwane added.

Impact On Victims

Throughout the trial, the victims spoke out, and a victim impact statement highlighted their profound loss of trust in those meant to protect them.

The survivors of these attacks now face a difficult path ahead as they work to regain their self-esteem and confidence.

Lorraine Nel, the prosecutor for the regional court, indicated that the ramifications of these atrocious acts extend well beyond physical injuries. The court acknowledged that Hartley’s actions have condemned each victim to a lifetime of trauma.

“The emotional scars run deeper, are more enduring, and exceed the narratives presented in the victim impact statements,” Nel affirmed.

The court also emphasized Hartley’s utter lack of remorse. In response to the grave ruling, the NPA in Gauteng reiterated its strong commitment to combatting gender-based violence and calling for stricter punishments for offenders.
