Marrianhill – Once more, a haulage truck was involved in a collision with multiple vehicles at the Marrianhill Toll Plaza on the N3 this past weekend.
The truck, which was carrying copper from Zambia, experienced brake failure on Sunday, 15 December 2024, causing it to crash into a bus and two cars at the Plaza.
Ten passengers from the bus suffered injuries and were taken to Prince Mashiyeni Hospital for medical care.
“In light of the driver’s admission regarding the brake failure, we believe the truck owner should be held accountable,” remarked Siboniso Duma, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements.
“Moreover, we are improving our roadworthiness inspections by deploying 197 traffic officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
“We extend our thanks to the national Department of Transport for this deployment.”
The newly assigned officers will support the efforts of over 2,745 traffic officers already enforcing traffic laws and surveilling our roads to maintain safety for all users.
MEC Duma emphasized that the 197 traffic officers will aid in monitoring regions known for dangerous conditions.
High-risk locations for vehicle accidents—many of which have led to fatalities—are identified in Durban, Mtubatuba, and Ugu.
