Supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have received a definitive signal regarding the standing of notable MP Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi: he has been “cancelled,” at least in terms of his sway within the party.

Julius Malema’s change in attitude when addressing questions about Ndlozi highlighted the difficulties confronting Winnie Madikizela-Mandela House since the exit of his former comrade Floyd Shivambu and others who moved to Jacob Zuma’s MK Party.

Ndlozi has faced criticism following Shivambu’s “betrayal,” as characterized by Malema, that led to the upheaval within the EFF.

As the conference kicked off on Friday, it became increasingly clear that the rumors of his exclusion were indeed true.

The noticeable absence of the former EFF spokesperson at the national elective conference at Nasrec was evident, and Malema quickly brushed off any media inquiries concerning Ndlozi’s role within the party.

Ndlozi’s persistent silence and lack of presence at EFF events raise questions about whether this notable politician will continue being part of an organization that has effectively marginalized him.

In a fervent response on Saturday, Malema labeled questions about Ndlozi as “nonsense” and “newspaper gossip.”

“Why are you fixating on one person among the many attendees as if he is the conference?” a visibly annoyed Malema challenged the press.

“As if this [conference] will not go ahead? It is indeed happening, and it is going on without him.

“We are here to discuss political matters, not egos or individuals who think they are more significant than the organization; it will once again illustrate that the organization surpasses all of them.

“As a principle and policy, we will not entertain any further nonsense regarding Mbuyiseni Ndlozi… Ever.”

Malema’s firm comments about Ndlozi’s well-publicized absence from the EFF conference sent a strong message about the widening rift between the two leaders.

Ndlozi is essentially barred and muted.

It was classic Malema asserting his dominance openly, disregarding the sentiments of Ndlozi’s supporters.

This dismissive behavior encapsulates Ndlozi’s present situation as Malema aims to reinforce his grip on power and counter any internal challenges.

Many had speculated that Ndlozi would follow in Shivambu’s footsteps, considering their close professional ties, but Ndlozi has recently reaffirmed his allegiance to the party.

Conversely, Malema’s position is likely to resonate negatively with the EFF’s supporter base, particularly those who hoped to see Ndlozi elected into the top six during this weekend’s proceedings.

Ndlozi enjoys considerable popularity among the red berets, especially among younger supporters who are vital to EFF’s “generational mission.”

While this period is crucial for the EFF as it navigates the challenge of keeping members dissatisfied with Malema’s leadership style, he has opted to double down and assert his authority.

So, what lies ahead for Ndlozi?

Will he choose to depart from the EFF, or will he remain, demonstrate his loyalty, and strive to regain Malema’s confidence?

It is noteworthy that EFF MP Tebogo Mokwele, following her expulsion for accepting funds from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s CR22 campaign, was readmitted to the party and successfully reclaimed her role as an MP just two months ago.

Ndlozi’s next moves, should he decide to confront this impasse, will be pivotal for the long-term sustainability of the EFF.
