President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has revealed plans for the country to host a Formula One race.
F1 has not been staged in Africa since the 1993 South African Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen received his trophy for achieving a fourth consecutive world title during a ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
Kagame addressed attendees at the event, speaking to the FIA’s General Assembly: “I am excited to officially declare that Rwanda is looking to revive racing in Africa by hosting a Formula One Grand Prix.”
“Thank you to (F1 CEO) Stefano Domenicali and everyone in the F1 team for the positive progress made in our discussions so far.”
“Rest assured, we are treating this opportunity with the respect and commitment it deserves.”
“Together, we can build something we all can take pride in.”
Domenicali mentioned in August that Rwanda plans to host a race at a permanent venue.
It has been reported that the racetrack will be designed by a team led by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz from Austria and will be situated near a new international airport, currently being constructed 40 kilometers away from Kigali.
Lewis Hamilton expressed in August that it is the right time for a return to Africa and is actively working with both Rwanda and South Africa to facilitate this.

The seven-time world champion stated, “The timing couldn’t be better. It’s essential that we don’t keep adding races in other regions while overlooking Africa, a continent that often gets exploited without any returns.”
“Having a Grand Prix in Africa would truly showcase the continent’s beauty and boost tourism and various opportunities. It’s time we recognized Africa.”
This week marks a historic moment as the FIA holds its general assemblies in Africa for the first time, with FIA’s Emirati President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Rwanda’s Sports Minister Richard Nyirihishema meeting in Kigali.
Ben Sulayem commented, “Conducting our meetings in Rwanda at such a pivotal time in the FIA’s calendar highlights the strength of this nation and its growing influence in motorsport.”
“We share common values and ambitions in crucial areas like innovation, sustainability, and road safety, and I look forward to our continued collaboration.”
“The future of motorsport in Africa appears bright.”
Verstappen is also involved in “community service” in Rwanda following an incident at a press conference during the Singapore Grand Prix in October.
This initiative includes the development of an FIA Affordable Cross Car, designed locally in Rwanda, based on specifications set by the governing body.
