Johannesburg – Professor Tawana Kupe, an esteemed Global Higher Education Strategy Adviser and the former Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, has assumed the role of editor for a new book entitled “Higher Education and SDG4.”

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations, SDG4 is particularly crucial for Higher Education institutions.

“Adopting a proactive approach, Higher Education and SDG4 explores the changing educational landscape, highlighting its vital roles and necessary initiatives to achieve ‘Quality Education’,” notes the International Association of Universities (IAU), which represents global higher education.

“We at the IAU are thrilled to announce the publication of our partner and Executive Leadership Programme facilitator Prof. Tawana Kupe’s latest work, ‘Higher Education and SDG4’.”

About the book:

The chapters address current challenges and concerns, moving beyond simple reflection to offer innovative ideas, strategies, and potential solutions that can empower higher education’s role in achieving SDG4.

By incorporating the perspectives and insights of students, faculty, and staff, the chapters tackle the complex factors that sustain inequity and examine how universities can actively work to mitigate it.

Stressing the importance of intentional, inclusive, and immediate action, Higher Education and SDG4 broadens its scope beyond educational frameworks to investigate how higher education institutions can strengthen societal capacities and act as key players in fostering sustainable futures.

The series, Higher Education and the Sustainable Development Goals, consists of 17 insightful volumes, each analyzing a specific SDG through the lens of higher education.

Employing a solutions-oriented framework, every volume discusses how higher education is contributing to the achievement of Agenda 2030.

This series is curated by Wendy Purcell, a Professor at Rutgers University and an Academic Research Scholar at Harvard University, as well as an Emeritus Professor and University President Emerita.
