A mother’s heartbreaking journey to find her missing daughter culminated in despair when she discovered that her child had been killed.

Fundiswa Masa, 45, was at her job last Wednesday when her 24-year-old daughter, Thina, went missing. Masa, who works night shifts, only realized by Friday morning that Thina had not come back home.

“I last saw her on Wednesday before I left for work. When I returned Thursday morning, I found the door ajar and the burglar gate unlocked,” Masa recounted.

Initially, she thought Thina might be at a neighbor’s house and went to sleep. However, by Friday, her concerns over her daughter’s absence prompted her to reach out to friends and Thina’s boyfriend, but no one had seen her since Tuesday.

The Disturbing Discovery

Upon reporting Thina missing to the police, a distressing detail emerged. “The detective asked me to describe my daughter and mentioned a woman’s body discovered in a ditch,” she recalled. Masa had come across the news on Facebook but had dismissed it as unrelated, given the differing descriptions initially shared.

When the detective showed her items recovered with the victim, Masa’s worst fears were confirmed. “He displayed her cerise pink dress and shoes. I recognized they belonged to my daughter,” she said, emphasizing that the officer had shielded her from seeing the victim’s injuries.

Police Inquiry and Arrest

Sergeant Wesley Twigg reported that the body was found in a ditch in Asanda Village, Cape Town, on Thursday evening by a passerby. A 31-year-old man has since been arrested and charged with murder.

“The body was discovered by a member of the public who alerted the police. The circumstances surrounding her death are currently under investigation,” Twigg stated.

The suspect appeared in the Strand Magistrates Court on Monday and is unknown to the family. “I don’t recognize him. He looks like a thug,” Masa commented, noting that the suspect claimed to have no permanent address.

Fundiswa Masa now faces the harrowing reality of losing her daughter. “She was so young and didn’t deserve this,” Masa said, her voice heavy with grief.

Police investigations are ongoing as the community mourns yet another life lost to violence.
