Johannesburg – A recent report by Amnesty highlights that Israel is perpetrating acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Amnesty International has indicated that its fieldworkers are currently in Gaza, engaging with survivors, witnesses, local organizations, and journalists to gather information.
“We are among only two international human rights organizations present in Gaza, documenting the ongoing crisis,” Amnesty stated on Thursday, (5 December 2024).
“Our investigations have confirmed that Israel has violated the Genocide Convention, committing genocidal acts and demonstrating an intent to destroy the Palestinian people through its policies, actions, and omissions, treating them as less than human.”
“This report builds on decades of research in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and follows our 2022 assertion that Israel enforces a system of oppression and domination that amounts to apartheid, a crime against humanity.”
Amnesty reported that its findings suggest Israel has deliberately induced death and inflicted physical and mental harm while creating living conditions aimed at the eradication of Palestinians.
“This includes war crimes such as extermination, forced displacement, and starvation,” stated the human rights organization.
“Our team interviewed 212 witnesses, local officials, and healthcare professionals, while our Crisis Evidence Lab authenticated visual and digital evidence, including satellite imagery.”
“We analyzed statements made by Israeli leaders and military personnel.”
“Statements indicating genocidal intent from political leaders and military officials have been mirrored by Israeli soldiers on the ground, as seen in social media footage.”

South Africa Expresses Support for Amnesty Report
South Africa has voiced its support for Amnesty International’s report, which underscores the genocide experienced by the Palestinian population in occupied Gaza.
The findings reinforce South Africa’s argument presented before the International Court of Justice and correspond with various United Nations reports:
Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, remarked that last year’s assurances from Israeli leadership to devastate Gaza have come to fruition.
“The Strip now lies in ruin, filled with rubble and human remains,” where survivors are struggling to endure, and bodies are rotting amidst the debris of clinics and hospitals.
Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, emphasized the need for the international community to recognize the situation in Gaza as genocidal.
She highlighted the importance of understanding the broader implications of the current reality in Palestine, noting that while Palestinians have historically faced war crimes and crimes against humanity, the present situation is unprecedented.
The work of Amnesty International should be viewed as part of the broader framework of human rights advocacy.
“We urge the international community to support the defense of human rights and to fortify protections for human rights defenders against any potential repercussions from their actions,” stated the SA Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
“We call on all to stand up for and aid those who expose atrocities and advocate for the oppressed.”
“South Africa demands an immediate ceasefire and the protection of Palestinian lives and rights.”
Amnesty International, a respected and fiercely independent NGO, is recognized for its detailed and comprehensive reports, and this latest document meets that esteemed standard.
