
Pretoria – The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Pretoria hosted a remarkable reception at the Sheraton Hotel to honor the 53rd UAE National Day.
This distinguished event brought together senior officials from the South African government, ambassadors, high commissioners, business leaders, academics, civil society representatives, media personnel, and members of the South African community.
A Shared Legacy of Partnership
His Excellency Mahash Saeed Alhameli, UAE Ambassador to South Africa, warmly welcomed the esteemed guests, including delegates from South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

In his address, H.E. Alhameli reflected on the significant accomplishments since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1994.
He underscored the enduring friendship and growing collaboration between the two nations, which exemplifies constructive international relations.
With 2024 marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the UAE and South Africa, it coincides with South Africa’s commemorations of three decades of democracy.
This dual celebration underscores the profound historical ties and shared aspirations for progress and prosperity.
Strengthening Economic and Strategic Relations
Nelia Barnard, a senior official representing the South African government, delivered an impactful speech, highlighting the importance of their bilateral partnership.

Barnard stated, “This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate thirty years of diplomatic relations with the UAE, aligning with three decades of our democracy.
“These anniversaries strengthen our mutual dedication to cultivating a vibrant and fruitful partnership.
“The UAE’s early recognition of democratic South Africa in 1994 laid the groundwork for a robust bilateral relationship.
“Throughout the years, high-level interactions, such as the recent discussions between President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi during the G20 Summit in Brazil, illustrate the strategic importance of our partnership.”
On the economic front, the UAE has positioned itself as South Africa’s primary trading partner in the Middle East, with bilateral trade totaling R120 billion in 2023.
South African exports amounted to R47 billion, while imports from the UAE reached ZAR 73 billion.
Noteworthy investments from UAE companies, including DP World’s acquisition of Imperial Logistics for R12.7 billion and AMEA Power’s USD180 million solar project in Limpopo, have driven job creation and fostered socioeconomic development.
Expanding Multilateral Cooperation
The UAE’s recent accession as a full BRICS member in January 2024 represents a crucial moment in global multilateralism.

The representative remarked, “South Africa warmly welcomed the UAE into BRICS and is confident that its inclusion will further enhance the bloc’s inclusivity and cooperative spirit.”
The mutual commitment of both countries to dialogue, peace, and sustainable development underscores the robustness of their partnership.
Plans for the forthcoming fourth meeting of the Joint Committee for Cooperation in 2025 aim to reinforce collaboration across various sectors.
Innovation, Diplomacy, and Shared Vision
The UAE’s global leadership in innovation and scientific diplomacy was also highlighted, with both nations exploring opportunities in space exploration, renewable energy, and digital connectivity.
The representative reaffirmed a shared commitment to address critical global challenges, including climate change and peacebuilding initiatives.
South Africa values the UAE’s principled approach to regional issues, particularly regarding the Palestinian situation.
The representative reiterated South Africa’s support for a fair and just two-state solution, in accordance with international law, establishing East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.
Celebrating Achievements
The event concluded in a festive spirit, with attendees participating in a cultural celebration and a raffle that awarded air tickets to two fortunate winners.
