An important property agreement has been reached for a segment of a City-owned location in Paardevlei, Somerset West, paving the way for an ambitious R900-million film studio endeavor led by Cape Point Film Studios (CPFS).

The contract was completed after a site visit conducted by Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayco Member in charge of Economic Growth.

This innovative project seeks to transform the site into a modern filmmaking facility, bolstering the city’s reputation as a global center for film production.

Job Creation

CPFS plans to refurbish existing buildings to create a state-of-the-art studio complex that meets international criteria.

Future developments also envision a dedicated sea and underwater sound stage, providing unique opportunities for filmmakers.

“We are thankful to the City of Cape Town for joining us on this venture because, as industry experts, we understand the rapid evolution of content and filmmaking,” remarked CPFS director Henry F Herring.

“The need for more strategic initiatives, including world-class sound stages to nurture this growth, not only assists filmmakers in storytelling but also plays a vital role in the sustainable advancement of the film industry, which exhibits a 1:4 multiplier effect on its value chain, consequently generating additional job opportunities.”

A Destination for Local and International Productions

Meanwhile, Vos emphasized the project’s potential to invigorate Cape Town’s creative economy.

Recent findings from the South African Cultural Observatory mapping study indicate that the cultural and creative sectors contributed R161 billion to the nation’s GDP.

“This lease is set to produce hundreds of jobs, inject nearly R1 billion into the local economy, and boost tourism in Cape Town,” Vos further commented.

“The creative economy is recognized as one of the leading sectors in the city.”

How Cape Town Plans to Make Its Hiking Trails SAFER This Summer

In related news, the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is taking steps to enhance security measures to better protect residents and tourists during the busy season.

Cape Town boasts stunning mountain hikes in its vicinity. However, the recent surge in foot traffic has led to an increase in opportunistic crime.

Last summer, SANParks dealt with a number of robberies and muggings at various popular spots within the Table Mountain National Park.

In preparation for the holiday season, the CoCT is boosting security at popular tourist destinations, including hiking trails, historic neighborhoods, and the city center.
