MATS HUMMELS delivered a stunning equalizer in stoppage time, marking his return to European action since the Champions League final, preventing Claudio Ranieri’s team from suffering a defeat.

The 35-year-old German player made a crucial sliding finish to a cross from former Manchester City star Angelino in the dying seconds, breaking through Spurs’ defense.

He had not participated in a European match since his loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final at the end of the previous season.

Spurs were aiming for a vital three points to bolster their chances of automatic qualification to the Europa League knockout stage.

Son Heung-min netted a penalty, complemented by a goal from Brennan Johnson, which sandwiched an equalizer from Evan N’Dicka and appeared to secure the victory.

Nevertheless, despite countless opportunities from both teams, Ranieri secured a crucial point on his return to English football, thanks to Hummels.

The 73-year-old former Chelsea and Leicester City manager took charge of Roma for the third time only earlier this month.

Fans were curious to see which version of Spurs would show up after a season riddled with inconsistency.

Would it be the squad that overpowered Manchester City 4-0 last match, or the team that allowed Ipswich to achieve their first Premier League victory of the season?

Regardless, Postecoglou’s Tottenham continues to deliver exciting matches, and this was no exception.

Spurs had a golden opportunity to start strongly when Hummels fouled the impressive Pape Matar Sarr in the box within the first three minutes.

Initially, referee Glenn Nyberg denied a penalty, but VAR prompted him to reassess the situation at the pitchside monitor, leading to a reversal of his decision.

Captain Son calmly converted the penalty, outsmarting keeper Mile Svilar.

This match marked Ranieri’s second outing in charge, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Serie A leaders Napoli, managed by former Spurs coach Antonio Conte.

Paulo Dybala made a notable early attempt that Fraser Forster saved well, filling in due to Guglielmo Vicario’s broken ankle.

Shortly after, however, there was nothing Forster could do as Roma equalized when N’Dicka headed in Dybala’s free-kick off the crossbar.

Ranieri thought his team had taken the lead with a spectacular volley from Stephan El Shaarawy, but it was ruled offside by a narrow margin.

Spurs answered with a shot from Johnson that Angelino cleared off the line.

Then, in the 34th minute, the hosts regained their lead with a rapid counter-attack.

Sarr delivered a perfectly-weighted pass for Dejan Kulusevski, who raced down the wing and crossed for Johnson to finish accurately.

Postecoglou’s delight was evident with a fist pump as the Welshman celebrated his ninth goal in 19 appearances for Spurs this season.

It could have been even better before halftime, but Son shot over the bar after the ball fell to him following Kulusevski hitting the post.

Ranieri’s team managed to score twice in the second half, though both were disallowed due to Artem Dovbyk being offside.

Pedro Porro deflected an Angelino volley onto the crossbar before striking the woodwork himself with a dangerous free-kick.

Spurs hit the post again when Dominic Solanke’s header found it for the third time.

This proved crucial, as Forster made two remarkable late saves, yet Roma’s perseverance paid off when Hummels equalized in the dying moments.
